About the course
Introduction to Safewards is a practical course for healthcare workers who want to reduce conflict, strengthen therapeutic relationships and create safer, more humane care environments. The course introduces Safewards as an evidence-based model for understanding why conflict happens and how staff can respond earlier, more consistently and with greater compassion. Learners explore the difference between a culture of care and a culture of custody, and are encouraged throughout to ask: does this enable good care, or does it create control?

I’m a mental health clinician, Safewards trainer and implementation lead with experience across mental health units, emergency departments and acute wards. I became an expert in Safewards through real practice: implementing it, training teams, reviewing fidelity and supporting champions. I’ve seen how challenging it can be for busy, pressured teams to take on new ways of working, especially when it feels like “extra work”. I’m excited to share Safewards because I know it can improve the experience of care for patients, families and staff. My goal is to help teams use these interventions with confidence, consistency and compassion, shifting care from control toward connection.
